REASONS TO RECOMMEND
Diverse opportunities

The fund offers investors a broad range of themes and investment opportunities across the spectrum of the UK economy from retailers to manufacturing exporters, from high-tech growth companies to established mainstream brands. Moreover, UK smaller companies are more internationally exposed than is generally perceived, deriving earnings both from the domestic and global markets.

Hidden value

Smaller companies tend to be less prominent and less well researched than their larger counterparts with the result that analysts and investors do not always fully understand them. Consequently, the shares may be incorrectly priced and may offer investors unrecognised value.

Award winning team

Merian Global Investors’ highly regarded, long established small and mid cap UK equity team is recognised as an industry leader. It has won numerous awards and is led by Daniel Nickols, recognised by Trustnet as one of the UK’s top-tier ‘alpha’ investors.

Flexible investment approach

The fund aims to provide investors with capital growth throughout the market cycle. Consequently, the manager adopts a flexible approach to changing market conditions through, for example, a willingness to hold value and/or growth stocks, depending on the conditions and outlook.

Fund manager, Daniel Nickols, works within Merian Global Investors’ multi-award winning small and mid cap UK equity team. The team includes five portfolio managers and three analysts. Daniel, who is head of UK small and mid cap equities, has been a dedicated smaller company fund manager since 1999. He joined the company in 2001 and has managed the Merian UK Smaller Companies Fund since January 2004. The fund’s deputy manager is Nick Williamson, who has been with the company since 2008.
